Calexico + Momofuku Milk Bar

Last month I went to the new Calexico location that opened in the Lower East Side.
I went expecting the food to be slamming. Unfortunately only the nachos meet my expectations.
Roasted corn, guacamole, black beans, cheese sauce, pico de gallo, jalapenos, sour cream...
They were literally the best nachos I have ever had.
I ordered a baja fish taco and a chicken taco. Both were a thumbs down.
PB & I walked around LES. I wanted dessert so we headed to the East Village.
BunnyM paste up
We ended up at Milk Bar.
I got cereal milk soft serve! So good, it literally tasted like I was eating frozen milk that had corn flakes soaking in it.

Tacombi

I've been meaning to go to Tacombi for the longest time. Two weeks ago on a rainy afternoon, I met up with one of my good friends for tacos.
The atmosphere is awesome! Food is served from a vintage Volkswagen van.
It really feels like a beach-side eatery in Mexico.
Started off with some good ol' chips and guac.
Bohemia beer is one of the best Mexican beers I've had.
Esquites is a traditional Mexican snack. Roasted corn, queso fresco, lime and chipotle mayo in a cup..Delish!
My favorite taco of the three I ordered was the crispy fish taco with red cabbage and chipotle mayo.
So many sauces. The 3rd bottle from the left was hibiscus chipotle. Yummy, sweet and tangy!
The corn and poblano pepper taco was good. The veggie and egg taco was my least favorite.
Tacos range from $3-5. They serve you two tortillas with each taco so you can fit extra filling on the second one. Bang for your buck.
Pretty mosaic Lady of Guadalupe in the bathroom.
All in all I give Tacombi a 4.5 out of 5! Great atmosphere, good food, spacious, and super decent pricing.

Huevos Rancheros Recipe

Today I awoke craving a nice hearty brunch. I looked around my kitchen to see what I could make and decided that huevos rancheros would be perfect!
Here's my easy-to-make version of a popular Mexican breakfast dish.
What you'll need: Eggs, corn tortillas, one large tomato, one medium sized onion, salsa, hot sauce (I'm using Valentina because it's great),
cheese (you can use shredded or queso fresco), pickled or fresh jalapenos, avocado and beans.
Toss the chopped up tomato and onion in a greased pan.
While it's sautéing, chop up a little bit of jalapeno and toss it in the pan.
While that cooks, cut your avocado.
Once it's all lightly browned pour in your salsa and hot sauce. Depending on how chunky you like it add more or less salsa.
If you like it spicier and not as chunky add more hot sauce.
While that thickens, start heating your tortillas. You can just heat them so they stay soft or let them get crispy. (I like my tortillas with a slight crunch)
I'm heating up left over beans from yesterday but you can use canned black beans or canned refried beans.
As for the eggs, make them sunny-side up. Don't over cook them! The yolk should be somewhat runny.
Spread the beans on the tortilla along with the salsa.
Place the eggs on top of the beans and salsa sauce. Put as much cheese and avocado as you want and enjoy!

Underwhelming Taqueria

This past weekend I went to Taqueria LES. It's a hole in the wall with pretty cool decor.
The food was cheap and decent. Positively NOT the best Mexican food I've had and I definitely wouldn't go back.
My friend Gabriella ordered the enchiladas. They were authentic tasting but the chicken was dry.
Paula and I ordered the fish tacos. They were alright. No real complaints. But I bet I could have made a more delicious fish taco.
I ordered potato flautas as well. Those were yum. It was the only thing I was really pleased with.
All in all I give Taqueria LES a 5 out of 10. It was super noisy, overcrowded, and the food was underwhelming.
For dessert we went to one of my favorite place, Little Cupcake Bakeshop
That heavenly thing up there is pecan caramel cheesecake. It was so dense and delicious.

Weekday Dinner Dates

Monday night I went to San Loco for a quick bite and drink before heading to the Mercury Lounge to see my archaeology professor's band.
My puta and I got mango margaritas. They were tropically delicious and not to mention pretty strong. Quite the perfect summer drink!
But unfortunately it's not the summer..
That up there is a big pile of vegetarian nachos.
San Loco: Gringo Mex
King Charles the Martyr at the Mercury Lounge.
Tuesday afternoon I meet up with my gurl Sasha Lame
We headed to LES to go to one of my newfound favorite places The Meatball Shop
I got a meatball pesto hero with a side mixed green salad. Their pesto is seriously the best pesto I've ever had.
Sasha got the meatballs and spaghetti in parmesan sauce. It was so creamy and cheesy.
